of mails sent by Foreign Post Offices in China to Europe by the E. & G. Steamers. On June 20th. the foreign post offices in Shanghai sent 24 bags for Europe by the E. & O.:on the 7th.
December one only was sent.
It will be seen from the above figures that while the mail despatched from our Agencies to Foreign European Countries is insignificant the mail despatched to Great Britain is considerable in bulk and is likely to increase largely as the route becomes better known. If an increase takes place a large amount of extra work will be thrown upon the Shanghai and Chefoo Offices and it is doubtful if the existing staffs at these Agencies will be competent to deal with it.
With regard to the last paragraph of Mr. Smith's letter the Agents at Shanghai and Chefoo have been instructed to take over the London mails from the Russian Post Offices and these mails are now being regularly received.
